BRUTALITY: “Mortal Kombat II” Pushed Back to 2026

Well, this was something we didn’t see coming. Like a sneak attack from underneath, or a harpoon through the chest from across the arena, Warner Bros. just landed a critical blow to the hopes of fans of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise. The latest installment in the film series was slated to come out less than two months from now on October 24th. We’re going to have to wait til the middle of 2026 before the Kombat kommences.

Warner Bros. Pictures tried to breathe new life into the film adaptations of the famed video game series back in 2021. “Mortal Kombat” was a complete reboot of the ’90s films that got knocked out after the disastrous showing of “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.” Since then, even the games themselves went on a series of highs and lows in quality until things started returning to champion form with 2015’s “Mortal Kombat X.” The follow up, “Mortal Kombat 11” in 2019 turned out to be the biggest selling game in the entire franchise. Seems like a good time to bring the films back!

Then the pandemic happened. “Mortal Kombat” (2019) was the victim of some awful timing and it seems like “Mortal Kombat II” is suffering the same fate but for different reasons. Warner Bros. is reportedly not feeling very confident with the October release time frame. They’re concerned about competition from other films that will be releasing and fearing the Halloween season may not be the best time for the video game adaptation. Given the amount of creatures and gore in the games, it actually seems like the perfect time, but we’re not studio executives. Warner Bros. also had success in late-spring, early-summer with some of their May releases, and that’s when we’re going to see “Mortal Kombat II” take the fighting stage.

“Mortal Kombat II” will now hit theaters May 15th, 2026.

That’s a good nearly 6 months to delay a film, but clearly Warner Bros. is hoping for a taste of that summer blockbuster money. It comes at a less than stellar time for the franchise in general though as “Mortal Kombat 1,” the latest game in the series, recently announced it would not be producing any further content updates. The title was heavily criticized for a lack of features and excessive monetization. Let’s hope that by the time May comes around, viewers have a renewed appreciation for the taste of blood.
