As fans we can all get a little Veruca Salt from time to time. Fantasy enthusiests hit that line long ago with the wait for George R.R. Martin’s “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring” (the final novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series). During a panel at WorldCon in Seattle one fan took this frustration too far by demanding Martin hand “The Winds of Winter” over to Brandon Sanderson, who was also on the panel.
Why you may ask? Because, according to this “fan,” Martin is “probably going to die soon.”

“Winds of Winter”
Over the weekend the author was sitting on SFF Addicts Podcast’s live panel with Sanderson, Robin Hobb, Rebecca Roanhorse, and Ryan Cahill. During a scheduled Q&A session, this alleged fan of his work made their rude demands before Martin’s fellow panelists fired back. The audience members reacted by booing, and several posted negative comments about it online.
Martin has previously stated that “The Winds of Winter” is more than 75% done, without the aid of Sanderson we might add. It will also be the longest novel he has ever written, which is saying something given his body of work. As far as we know he isn’t scribbling away on his death bed either, so time is as finite as it always is.
We get it, waiting sucks, but if Martin was to rush through writing the novel it would also suck. Harassing him and making rude comments isn’t going to make “The Winds of Winter” come to fruition any faster. And for legal reasons we would like to add that our Editor-in-Chief has an alibi for this event.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about “The Winds of Winter” as they become available. You can read
