We’ve got another entry into the “Things That Shouldn’t Exist But Do” food universe. Have you ever gotten the overwhelming urge to stick your tongue to a battery? Well, Rewind has got the chips line for you, a limited run of 9-volt battery flavored treats. The company uses an innovative recipe that creates a metallic tang with a slight buzz, but is “entirely safe, food-grade, and contains no actual battery components.”
For legal reasons, Rewind does “not recommend or condone licking, biting, or otherwise ingesting real batteries. This product is a novelty snack and should be enjoyed responsibly.”

“It was definitely an unusual brief,” says Mattias Larsson, Rewind’s chef and flavourist, who led the development. “We used a blend of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to create the tongue-tingling effect, and balanced it out with mineral salts which give the chips a metallic tang. The result is surprisingly tasty and it’s definitely a flavour that sparks curiosity.”
For those who want a shocking snacking experience, there are four flavors: Cheese & Onion, Tangy Sriracha, Creamy Paprika, and BBQ & Honey. It will initially launch in the Netherlands, before entering other European markets.

“Rewind is a brand inspired by nostalgia, so we thought what better way to launch but with one of the most nostalgic shared experiences of the 90’s. This is a delicious tribute to a weird universal memory,” adds Antti Lauronen, Paulig’s Head of Creative & Design. “And if chips flavoured like 9-volt batteries aren’t for you, we have a range of classics available with a modern twist.”
These battery-flavored chips are currently available at AH, Jumbo, Plus, Hoogvliet, and PicNic. You an learn more about the company here.
