Hideo Kojima’s “Death Stranding” is Getting an Anime!

When video game director Hideo Kojima is brought up, the subject of film is not far behind. Kojima is a self-admitted cinephile and his games are a reflection of the films he watched. In turn, his games have become increasingly like films as technology has evolved. One only need to look at the evolution of the “Metal Gear” franchise over the years. There’s also “Death Stranding,” which boasts a cast of stars ranging from Norman Reedus to Lindsay Wagner, and even “Mad Max” director George Miller.

We know a film is being developed based on the property, and now, there’s also an anime in the works!

In an interview with Vogue Japan, Kojima talks about his friendship with director Nicolas Winding Refn. Refn is largely known for his films “Drive,” “Only God Forgives,” and “The Neon Demon.” His likeness is also used in “Death Stranding” for the character of Heartman. Kojima mostly discusses how he’s aiming to bridge the gap between films and games, but then he briefly tosses in a nugget about working on a “Death Stranding” anime.

It’s kind of funny how this is presented in an almost offhand way. It’s mentioned once and not again. We don’t know if it’s going to be a film or a series, nor do we know if it’s going to be an adaptation of the game’s story or something that’s happening before, after, or in-between the events of Death Stranding and its soon to be released sequel.

How will an anime tie into the possible film, if at all? This universe of parcels, traversal, age advancing rain, exploding monstrosities, and portable babies is a unique one to say the least. The fact that it’s an expanding one now is a testament to Kojima’s vision and drive. We’ll continue to update you as we find out more information about this animated project.

Kojima’s next game “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” releases on June 26th, 2025.
