Michael Sarnoski to Direct A24’s “Death Stranding” Film

There are only a few names in video game development that command so much respect that their name alone can sell a game. Hideo Kojima is one of them. Even though he’s done other projects, it was “Metal Gear Solid” in 1998 that broke him into the global consciousness. Kojima has always had a flair for the cinematic and a deep love of film, which is why it wasn’t surprising to find out that he would be producing a film based on his game, “Death Stranding.” Now that film has a director who knows a bit about apocalyptic horror.

In 2019, Kojima’s own studio, Kojima Productions released “Death Stranding.” This was Kojima’s first game after having a VERY public falling out with the company he previously worked with, Konami. It was a moment that rocked the industry and fans alike, especially considering it had been revealed prior to this that Kojima was working on a “Silent Hill” project entitled, “Silent Hills.” It would involve him, Guillermo del Toro and actor Norman Reedus. With that being scrapped, Kojima went undeterred into “Death Stranding,” which is a game that’s hard to describe in terms of concept and story.

It basically involves the collapse of society thanks to a global event that birthed odd monsters into the world as well as a kind of rain that causes things to age and deteriorate. It already had a film-like quality to it since Kojima carried over Reedus as the main protagonist, had a character in the likeness of del Toro, and also cast Léa Seydoux, Lindsay Wagner, Mads Mikkelsen, Margaret Qualley, and George Miller. Lord (Kojima) only knows if they’ll show up in the film or not, but we do know the director will be Michael Sarnoski.

Sarnoski previously helmed “Pig” starring Nicolas Cage, and “A Quiet Place: Day One.” A24 is set to produce the film alongside Kojima Productions. Sarnoski will also be penning the script for it.

This will mark one of two projects in the “Death Stranding” universe as “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is due out June 24th, 2025.

We are eager to find out what direction this movie will be going in and if it will be a straight adaptation of the games or something that exists alongside them to further the universe. As we find out more details in the upcoming months, we’ll be sure to update you.
