Its been 21 years since Mel Gibson directed and released “The Passion of the Christ.” Gibson’s religious beliefs were well-known, and the film was not without controversy when it was released. That controversy didn’t affect it too negatively, considering it held the record for the highest-grossing “R” rated film for two decades.
The sequel, which had been rumored for the better part of a decade, got an official title last year, and now it has a new home- Lionsgate.
According to the Bible, following the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, he resurrected three days later. He appeared to his apostles for 40 days following this, and then ascended to heaven. So, it makes a lot of sense for the upcoming sequel to be titled “The Resurrection of the Christ.”
Religious movies are also pretty big box office business.The recently released animated film “The King of Kings” has drawn a respectable $66 million at the box office off a roughly $25 million budget. Or an even better example that ties in Jim Caviezel who played Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ” is “Sound of Freedom.” The movie was HEAVILY marketed to religious and conservative audiences and made back its budget nearly 19 times over.
Gibson has made previous comments about what to expect with this new film. Caviezel is back on board to play Christ, and Gibson has described the plot as being a non-linear narrative, as well as “an acid trip.”
At present, there is no information about a possible release date or window.
