Alicia Silverstone Returning for “Clueless” Series at Peacock

Oh “Clueless,” further evidence that the works of Jane Austen will continue to resonate through time in various forms. The 1995 teen comedy was largely inspired by the novel “Emma,” but is primarily known today for being intensely quote worthy and making Alicia Silverstone a household name, along with her character Cher Horowitz. Since all things retro seem to be coming back with a vengeance lately, especially from the ’90s, it was only a matter of time before “Clueless” was revived in some way shape or form as well. As it turns out, that time has come, and Silverstone is coming back along with it.

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Wasn’t there already a ‘Clueless’ series?” You’re right, there was, but you’re also remembering something from 30 years ago. In the fall of 1996, the adventures of Cher, Dee, and Amber continued in the form of the “Clueless” series on ABC’s TGIF block. Doesn’t get much more ’90s than that, when TGIF enters the picture. Ultimately the show would move to UPN and end its run after three seasons; but Silverstone wasn’t a part of it. This time around though will be different as she’ll be reprising the role she first made famous.

No plot details have been given regarding what direction the program will go in. We do know though that it’s currently in development at Peacock. Also, the show is being written, developed, and produced by the team of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage along with writer Jordan Weiss. Schwartz and Savage had previously worked on “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl” together while Weiss created the Kat Dennings led series, “Dollface” in addition to writing the upcoming “Freakier Friday“ film. Which is all to say, there’s a lot of talent behind the camera just with them alone. Add into this, Silverstone will also be attached as an executive producer alongside the original film’s writer and director, Amy Heckerling.

The original film still holds a place in the hearts of many a child of the ’80s and ’90s. Being able to check in with Cher some 30 years later in her life has the potential to be interesting. We’ll have to wait with baited breath in regards to who else from the original cast will be returning. As we hear more in the upcoming weeks we’ll make sure to keep you updated. Until then, we’ll be totally buggin if Paul Rudd doesn’t come back.
