Sarah Michelle Gellar Open to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Reboot

In 1997, the series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” based on the 1992 film of the same name, hit the air. After the show ended in 2003 star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular heroine, has been vocal about not wanting to return. Well, at least until now…

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Warner Bros. Pictures

During an interview on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Gellar revealed she may be changing her tune for a reboot.

“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar explained. “But watching ‘[And Just Like That…]’ and seeing ‘[Dexter: Original Sin],’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’ It could be anything. It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

Given the show’s successful spin-offs like “Angel,” “Buffy: The Animated Series,” and the continuation via comics, we agree that the universe is a big enough sandbox to play in. It just needs to be the right story to resurrect everyone’s favorite slayer. While Gellar’s willingness to return is a good sign, there is no indication a reboot will happen.

Gellar is currently starring in the “Dexter” prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” which is streaming on Paramount+.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about a possible “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” reboot if/when they become available. You can check out a clip from “The Drew Berrymore Show” interview below:
