5 pose ideas for portrait photography

To start with, let’s take a look at a few poses you can try out for your next portrait session. For even more pose ideas, check out pictures of people on Depositphotos. There, you’ll find a plethora of inspiration from professional photographers around the world.

    1. Make a frame with hands

One of the most creative portrait photography ideas is for your model to frame another model with their own hands. As in the photo below: elbows on shoulders, palms on the top of the head. Just like that, you can create a dynamic shot with an unusual composition.

    1. Create a triangle with legs

The next pose is all about creating a triangle using your legs. Thiswill most definitely result in a magazine-worthy shot. In addition to being visually interesting, the triangle position elongates a model’s legs; just like in a fashion magazine. As a result, this simple yet effective pose can add a high-fashion feel to your portrait.

    1. Touch your face

Whether to enhance facial features or simply add a touch of elegance, your model can play around with their face using their hands. First, such a pose can draw attention to the unique features of the model. Second, it can show their vulnerability or confidence, depending on the expression you choose to pair with it.

    1. Lie down on the floor

Leaning on one arm or resting your head on your hand while lying on the floor can create a relaxed atmosphere in the portrait. This photo idea is not a typical position for a model to be photographed in. Therefore, it can also add a sense of mystery and intrigue the viewer.

    1. Raise your hands up

Another creative position to try out is the raised arms pose. It creates an interesting dynamic in a photo. All because the model’s hands frame their face while also serving as leading lines, bringing the viewer’s eyes upwards. To add even more visual interest, have the model play with their hair or look off into the distance while in this pose.

5 portrait photography ideas at home

When a studio is not an option, there are still plenty of ways to create eye-catching portrait photography at home. You don’t always need pictures of people in your home, landscapes canvas prints wall art can do wonders for decorating your space.

    1. Pose with your back

For elegant portraits, shoot with the model’s back facing the camera. This position can help highlight the model’s silhouette. However, there’s more. If the viewer can’t see who’s in the photo, it can add intrigue to the shot, leaving the viewer wondering about the subject’s emotions. You can also ask the model to turn their head slightly over the shoulder.  It will add allure to the portrait, much like an endzone camera offers a unique perspective in sports by revealing angles not visible from the usual viewpoint.

    1. Shoot through glass

This at-home idea is challenging, but worth the effort. By shooting through glass, you can create a unique and almost surreal effect in your portrait. Yet, when taking pictures through glass, glares might get in the way. To get rid of reflections, use a lens hood and a polarizing filter, or simply get closer to the glass and find the right angle.

    1. Use a light pattern

One of the most popular studio portrait photography ideas, the light pattern portrait can also be recreated at home. All you need is a projector or any other light source to project a pattern onto your subject. With little work and few supplies, you can create a captivating image with an artistic touch.

    1. Play with shadows

Shadows have the power to add depth to photographs and also change the mood depending on how they are cast. Would you like your model to appear mysterious? Use shadows to partially hide the face. Want a more delicate, romantic look? Opt for diffused lighting to create subtle shadows.

    1. Get creative with a bath

Photos in a bath can be minimalist yet atmospheric. Depending on the size and filling of the bathtub, you can create different moods in your visuals. A bath with flowers or petals might evoke a romantic or dreamlike mood. A bath with candles can create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. A milk bath can provide contrast, highlighting the features of your model.

5 portrait photography ideas for beginners

Check out simple photo ideas to practice your portrait photography skills.

    1. Incorporate natural elements

Shooting something as simple as a person hiding behind flowers is an ideal start for a beginner photographer. Incorporating natural elements into your portraits can create more visual interest and make your photos look more lively.

    1. Shoot a piercing glance

Many famous portraits stand out only because of the emotion conveyed through the subject’s eyes. To achieve an effortless yet powerful look, Celeste Sloman advises to be decisive in your choices, while leaving room for collaboration with your model.

    1. Take pictures from different angles

Even the slightest change in perspective can completely transform the feel of a portrait. So, don’t underestimate the angle you’re shooting at. Although it may sound overly simple, photographing from above rather than at eye level is a game-changing portrait photography idea for beginners.

    1. Shoot face-to-face

Make your models’ faces touch or look at each other. Either way, this photography idea will create a sense of intimacy in your portraits. Especially if you emphasize only the subjects’ eyes or other body features.

    1. Use mirror reflections

Reflect a model in a mirror to create an abstract portrait. Or, have a model hold it to reflect an object, place, or sky. By creating such a portrait, you allow viewers to interpret the photo in different ways and fantasize about the story behind it.

    Bottom line

Portrait photography is an art form that requires constant experimentation. All in order to avoid creative stagnation and maintain a fresh perspective. Whether it’s trying out new portrait photography ideas, poses, or editing styles, the key to staying inspired in this genre is always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
