After years of waiting, Oscar-winner Mel Gibson’s 2004 film “Passion of The Christ” is getting a sequel. Jim Caviezel (“Person of Interest”) has confirmed that he will return to play Jesus in “Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.”
Gibson is reportedly in Malta scouting filming locations with the production team, alongside meetings with government officials on the Mediterranean island. Filming is expected to begin as early as 2025, once the promotional tour for Gibson’s upcoming action thriller “Flight Risk” is over.

Making a film about the crucifixion of the son of god was no easy task the first time around. Given that “Passion” was highly- praised by both viewers and critics, the pressure is really on to make the sequel even better.
It’s believed Gibson and Oscar nominated co-writer Randall Wallace (“Braveheart”) have written at least six drafts of the script. Wallace confirmed in April that the screenplay was finished. However, details about the sequel remain vague at this time.
“It’s not a linear narrative… you have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there. It’s a big story,” Gibson said in a 2022 interview. “It’s a difficult concept, and it has taken me a long time to focus and find a way to tell that story in a way that really delivers.”
The director has also described “Passion of the Christ: Resurrection” as an “acid trip.” This comment has fueled speculation that the sequel will have a focus on the supernatural. The fact that the first film blended otherworldly elements with graphically reality-based portrayal of the crucifixion, supports this.[Editor’s Note: also, you know, resurrection is not exactly a non-supernatural thing. Unless there’s a necromancer around. or Lazarus.]
