John Cena Announces Retirement From Wrestling

Few professional wrestlers are as well-known as John Cena, which is impressive considering you can’t even see him. The athlete/actor has now announced he is retiring from the WWE after two decades in the ring.

Cena broke the news to fans during a WWE event in Toronto on July 6th. “Tonight I officially announce my retirement from the WWE,” he said. This was met with waves of booing from the audience as the wrestler was clearly fighting back tears.

In a news conference after the event, Cena explained that his retirement would just be from wrestling since he feels physically “at my end.” His proposal to the company is to have 2025 be his last Wrestlemania, but NOT his last event. Between January and December, he will also be doing roughly 30 to 40 events which will end his time in the ring. The roster of events is tentative at this time due to needing to work around other projects like shooting season 2 of the “Peacemaker.”

    Cena’s Plans For WWE

However, just because Cena feels his time in the ring is over, doesn’t mean he will leave WWE altogether. The business plan he pitched to the organization involves him “Remaining in the WWE family in some capacity for an extended time to come.” Not only due to his passion for the sport but his intimate knowledge of it.

“I feel I have some wisdom locked up in here [gesturing at head] that could be of some value,” says Cena with a laugh. An understatement considering he is a 16-time WWE champion who has been wrestling since the early 2000s.

We will keep you posted on updates about Cena’s retirement from wrestling as they become available. In the meantime, you can check out season 1 of the “Peacemaker” exclusively on HBO and Max. Cena’s comments about his retirement are linked below:
