Robert Downey Jr. “Sherlock Holmes 3” ‘Still Very Much Alive’

With all the buzz around Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming young Sherlock Holmes tv series, producer Susan Downey has given an update about a possible “Sherlock Holmes 3.” The long-awaited film is a follow-up to 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes” and 2011’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” Both of which starred her husband, Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man”) as the titular character and Jude Law (“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”) as Dr. John Watson.

During an interview about “Sweet Tooth” season 3, Downey was asked if there were any updates on “Sherlock Holmes 3.”

    Downey’s Thoughts

“I mean, look, no, there’s no update, other than it’s still very much alive in our hearts,” Downey said. “Every day we talk about, ‘What is the best next version of that?’ Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I’m just like, ‘Can I get these guys back on screen together?,’ it’s magic. There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.”

The third installment has been in production hell for quite some time, and many have written off it ever happening. Not only has “Sherlock Holmes 3” had a revolving door of writers over the past decade, it also replaced Guy Ritchie (“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”), who directed the first two movies, with Dexter Fletcher (“Rocketman”).

Several release dates have been set but canceled, with filming halted for changes in the creative team. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and everything was halted once again. However, Downey and fellow Team Downey producer Amanda Burrell still say the project is a priority for them.

We will keep you posted on updates about “Sherlock Holmes 3” if/when they become available.
