“The Office” Spinoff Series Set at ‘Midwestern Newspaper’

We have some more news about the much-anticipated spinoff of “The Office”! The upcoming series is now being described as more of a ‘sister show’ to the NBC series, which was adapted from the UK series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

    “The Office,” NBCUniversal

This new show will have a brand new setting and characters, but will take place in the same Dunder Mifflin universe as “The Office.” It will keep the same documentary format, with Greg Daniels returning. He’ll be working with “Nathan For You” producer Michael Koman. The Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania will instead be replaced with a newspaper publishing office in the Midwest.

“I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot,” Daniels said. “Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

    The Plot

“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters,” the logline reads.

“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” Lisa Katz, NBCUniversal Entertainment President, said in a statement. “This new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”

This currently untitled series will start production in July. Domnhall Gleeson (“Alice & Jack“) and Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus“) are the only confirmed cast so far.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about this project as they become available. You can catch all episodes (including the extended Superfan ones!) on NBC’s streaming service Peacock.
