Bob Iger Explains ‘Reduced’ Marvel Output

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a huge cultural impact and has been since 2008. For over a decade, all you could hear anyone talk about was the next MCU movie. After “Avengers: Endgame” came out in 2019, everyone waited with bated breath for what could possibly come after Thanos’ defeat. Since the world shut down due to the global pandemic, we’ve gotten a lot of MCU content. Some would argue the 10 movies, 10 tv shows, and 3 specials we’ve gotten over the last four years is too much. Disney has a plan to combat that.

During Disney’s second-quarter earnings call, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Marvel Studios will be reducing their output. ““I’ve been working hard with the studio to reduce output and focus more on quality, that’s particularly true with Marvel,” he said. This change in output doesn’t appear to have any effects for Marvel projects coming out this year. It is possible the output change will effect 2026’s “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.”

“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two or at the maximum three,” Iger explained. “And we’re working hard on what that path is, we’ve got a couple of good films in ’25 and then we’re heading to more Avengers, which we’re extremely excited about.”

“Overall I feel great about the slate,” Iger continued. “It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on, the team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.”

While we ultimately have no idea how the output reduction will effect known upcoming MCU projects, we will be watching closely. It does feel like Iger is hoping to recapture the excitement and social buzz that the MCU experienced in the 2010s. If the reduced output causes any release date changes, we will report them.
