“Star Trek” ‘Origin Story’ Film Added to 2025 Release Slate

Since January, there have been rumblings about a new “Star Trek” origin story film. Paramount Studios has officially added the project to its 2025 theatrical release schedule. The currently untitled movie is said to take place decades before JJ Abrams‘ 2009 “Star Trek.”

Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, “Star Trek” (2009) Paramount Pictures, Bad Robot

The film was mentioned during Paramount’s annual CinemaCon panel on April 11th. It was also included in their slate of upcoming releases sent to the press. It reads:

    “UNTITLED STAR TREK ORIGIN STORY
    Director: Toby Haynes
    Writer: Seth Grahame-Smith
    Producer: JJ Abrams
This project is an origin story that takes place decades before the original 2009 Star Trek film.”

Zoe Saldana in “Star Trek” (2009) | Paramount Pictures. Spyglass Entertainment, Bad Robot

While that is a lot of information for a project in early development, that is all we know right now. There is no word on casting, if there will be legacy characters, possible plot line, or if this will officially be Kelvin Timeline. Although with Abrams involved, that’s probably likely. With the film being slated for a 2025 release, production will likely begin sometime this year.

The franchise has already experimented with origin stories before with “Enterprise,” “Discovery,” and the recently renewed “Strange New Worlds.” As well as “Star Trek” (2009) and “First Contact.” So there is really no telling what this new installment may have in store.

We will keep you posted on updates about this “Star Trek” origins film as they become available.
