With many shows having been canceled or waiting to hear about renewals, STARZ period drama “The Serpent Queen” is not among them. Season 2 has been greenlit, the cast is expanding, and we are excited to announce who is joining the Samantha Morton-led series.

Oscar nominee Minnie Driver (“Good Will Hunting,” “Our Flag Means Death“) is one of the ten new cast members. Driver will be taking on the roll of the infamous “Virgin Queen,” Queen Elizabeth I, opposite Morton’s Catherine de Medici. We can’t wait to see the two go toe to toe in a war of words and wit.

Angus Imrie, Emma McDonald, Stanley Morgan, Philippine Velge, Rosalie Craig, Isobel Jesper Jones, Bill Milner, Ashley Thomas, and Alexandre Willaume will also join the cast.

Imrie will be playing Henry IV, the son of Antoine de Bourbon and Jeanne d’Albret. While he may appear uncivilized, he is rather intelligent. Velge will play Margot, Catherine’s eldest daughter and polar opposite. McDonald will be reprising the role of Rahima, showcasing the character’s growth and new position in Catherine’s life. Morgan will be Anjou, the younger brother of King Charles and has a flair for disruptive violence.

Craig will play Henry IV’s mother Jeanne d’Albret and is considered self–righteous and disapproving. Milner will be King Charles IX, Catherine’s oldest son. Jones will take on the role of protestant preacher Edith. Willaume plays Montmorency, the wise Constable General of France. Thomas is Alessandro de Medici, a man of great charisma and considered very desirable.

“The Serpent Queen,” based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France,” tells the story of Catherine de Medici. de Medici was one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French History. The series is written and executive producer is Justin Haythe. Francis Lawrence and Erwin Stoff also serve as executive producers.

New episodes of “The Serpent Queen” are expected later this year. It is currently available to stream on the Starz app and through the Starz channel on Prime Video.
