Director/screenwriter Celine Song is still riding high after her directorial debut “Past Lives,” which took festivals by storm. That film follows childhood friends Nora and Hae Sung, who are torn apart when Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week, where they examine the ideas of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life. Making it a truly heartrending modern romance.

Song will now follow up “Past Lives” with the romantic comedy “Materialists,” starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson.

“Materialists” will be set in New York, and follow a high-end matchmaker who gets involved with a wealthy person. However, the roles Johnson, Pascal, and Evans will play are currently being kept under wraps. [Editor’s note: we’re all hoping Pascal and Evans are the couple, right? RIGHT?] Production is rumored to kick off in May of 2024.

The film will have Song teaming up again with A24, Killer Films, and 2AM. “Past Lives,” producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler for Killer Films and David Hinojosa of 2AM will also be returning for “Materialists.” A24 will handle the global release of the film.

Dakota Johnson, “Daddio” Sony Pictures Classic

“Past Lives,” is currently nominated for five Golden Globes, and two Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It is also nominated for three BAFTA Film Awards for Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film not in the English Language. And it has already raked in more than $20 million at the global box office.

Johnson will be next seen in Sony’s “Madame Web,” which is due out February 14th.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Materialists” as they become available.
