Rumors Swirl About Greg Daniels Rebooting/Reviving “The Office”

Earlier this year marked the 10th anniversary of the finale to the beloved US version of “The Office.” While some people argued the show went on a bit longer than it should have (basically the episodes after Michael Scott (Steve Carell) left, it’s generally well accepted that the finale ended things on a good note.

Since then, the show has continued to remain popular in reruns and streaming, enough to where there has been consistent talk about a reunion. Beyond that, now there’s rumors about a reboot or revival of the series.

Rainn Wilson, “The Office” NBC Universal, Peacock

Unnamed sources have claimed “The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels is looking to make one of his next projects a revival of the series. If true, this wouldn’t be the first or only revival that Daniels is working on. We know for sure that his animated series that he worked on with Mike Judge, “King of the Hill” is coming back. And sure, there’s probably enough fan demand to warrant a continuation of “The Office” but how feasable is it?

Jenna Fischer “The Office” NBC Universal

While several cast members including Creed Bratton, Jenna Fischer, and Angela Kinsey have been open to the idea of reprising their roles, that leaves out a lot of big names, including the aforementioned Steve Carell. If the show faltered hard after him leaving, how worthwhile would a revival be without him? Daniels has previously mentioned he’s had the idea for a revival, set in Scranton, featuring a mix of old and new employees at Dunder-Mifflin. That being the case, he’s also stated that he’s concerned that a revival would disappoint the fans, considering that the finale was well-received, and it was the ending that he and the staff wanted. Why jeopardize that with a revival?

Steve Carell as Michael Scott, “The Office” NBCUniversal

“The Office” is one of the more beloved sitcoms in American television history, especially when it comes to more modern ones. There’s also been another resurgence lately in sitcom revivals with the previously cited “King of the Hill,” “Night Court,” and the upcoming revival of “Frasier.“

All that said, a revival of “The Office” sounds a bit more like internet fanfiction come to life rather than something Greg Daniels is actively working on. Stranger things have happened for sure, and if it turns out there’s any legitimate traction to this rumor, we’ll keep you posted.
