McDonald’s is Discontinuing McCafé Bakery Items

Three years after debuting McCafé bakery items, McDonald’s is going to start phasing out some of the baked goods. The restaurant chain confirmed the apple fritter, blueberry muffin, and cinnamon roll are on the chopping block.

McDonald’s says they are “always listening to our fans and adjusting the menu based on what they crave.” The McCafé is not getting rid of all their sweet treats, items like cookies and apple pies will still be available. Perhaps the breakfast baked good were not selling as good as when they debuted.

McCafé Bakery Items Being Discontinued, McDonald’s

The McCafé bakery items debut was in October of 2020, the first time in almost a decade that McDonald’s added new bakery items. The bakery line was added to the menu in hopes of boosting morning sales against competitors. With many of the workforce returning to the office as the pandemic eases, breakfast sales have rebounded in recent quarters.

McDonald’s has recently entered a partnership with Krispy Kreme to sell doughnuts in 200 locations, in Kentucky. This interesting move could be the cause for discontinuing the bakery items already sold. This new partnership could bring in new customers and keep breakfast sales steady. Unlike the declining lunch and dinner sales due to menu prices rising.

The partnership also has more benefits to Krispy Kreme, as they are looking to expand their business. Krispy Kreme currently uses a hub-and-spoke business model, meaning they make their product in house and sell to third-party locations. Considering how few locations the doughnut chain has, this partnership will certainly bolster their business.
