Joel, Ethan Coen Reuniting for First New Project in 5 Years

Directing duo Joel and Ethan Coen are back! In a recent interview, Ethan revealed the Coen brothers are working together after a five-year hiatus on joint projects.

In 2018, the Coen brothers released “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” while announcing they would be focusing on solo projects for an undetermined amount of time. Recently, Ethan said they are developing a new movie together, ending the self-imposed separation.

“I’m working on something with Joel now,” Ethan said. But he gave no details on what it would be about. Fans are already theorizing it will be a neo-noir, but at this time that’s a big ol’ rumor. He also gave no indication of production timeframes or a release date. Literally, all we know is that the duo will be working together again on a film.

While five years may not seem like that long of a break. This has been the longest hiatus the brothers have taken from working together. Ever since their first film “Blood Simple” in 1984, they had been churning out films at a rate that would make anyone’s head spin.

That’s not to say either has been inactive though. In 2021 Joel wrote and directed the acclaimed “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” That starred Denzel Washington and the ever-present Frances McDormand (wife of Joel Coen).

Ethan wrote and directed the highly anticipated comedy “Drive-Away Dolls,” starring Matt Damon, Margaret Qualley, and the increasingly ever-present Pedro Pascal. That project will hit theaters on September 23rd of this year.

We will keep you posted on updates about this mysterious Coen brothers’ project as they become available
