William Shatner to Host “Stars On Mars” Competition Series

FOX will be sending celebrities to Mars (kinda) in a new competition series. Aptly titled “Stars on Mars,” the show will be hosted by none other than “Star Trek‘s” Captain James Tiberius Kirk, William Shatner! Fitting, since Shatner recently became the oldest man to reach space while he served as mission control on Jeff Bezos‘ Blue Origin ride.

“Stars on Mars” will send a group of celebrities to a mock red planet where they must live, eat, sleep, strategize, and get along. While they aren’t actually going into space, they will be living in a similar situation to a group on board a space station. They will need to face conditions at simulate life on Mars, and will need to use all their brains, strength, and unique skill sets, to remain the last person standing. The winner will claim the title of brightest star in the galaxy.  The team will compete in missions each week and vote to eliminate one of their crewmates.

“The moment I heard the pitch for Stars on Mars, I knew a show this bold, this big and this outlandish simply belonged on Fox,” Allison Wallach, President of Unscripted Programming for Fox Entertainment, said. “Watching celebrities take giant leaps out of their comfort zone and step into the unexpected will no doubt be truly transformational and comical. Throughout, we will learn a lot about these stars, and when you factor in William Shatner leading the charge from Mission Control, we have the makings of a show that’s ready for blast off.”

“Good news for our celebronauts from Mission Control,” Shatner said, the only confirmed celebrity for the series at this time. “Thanks to lower gravity on Mars, you’ll weigh 62% less. Bad news: the air is unbreathable, so if you’re from LA, it’ll remind you of home.”

“Stars on Mars” will be produced by Eureka Productions (“Holey Moley”), whose Chris Culvenor created the show’s format. Culvenor, Paul Franklin, Wes Dening, and Eden Gaha will all serve as executive producers along with showrunner Charles Wachter.

The series will premiere on June 5th of this year. We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Stars on Mars” as they become available. Check out the preview below:
