It sounds like the “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” sequel will star Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind.  Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon are expected to return for “Ghostbusters: Firehouse,” the working title for the film.

Gil Kenan, who co-wrote “Afterlife” with Jason Reitman, will be directing. Reitman, will take on the writer-producer role, alongside Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld. While not much is known about the sequel’s plot, sources have indicated that it will return to New York City and the iconic firehouse made famous in the original “Ghostbusters” films. Also, we may see Earnie Hudson‘s Winston Zeddemore lead the team!

    “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” Sony Pictures

After “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” became a hit with its November 2021 opening, it has been a high priority for Sony Pictures to get a sequel in production. The film, co-written by Reitman and Kenan, opened as the pandemic was winding down, and went on to make more than $200 million worldwide.

    Ghostbusters Adds Some Gut-Busters

For Nanjiani, the sequel is yet another big-time IP to add to his list of major franchise roles, which include Marvel Studios and Star Wars projects. He most recently starred in Hulu’s limited series “Welcome to Chippendales,” “Star Wars” spinoff series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” opposite Ewan McGregor, and Chloe Zhao‘s “Eternals.”

Oswalt, who stars in the Magnolia Pictures comedy “I Love My Dad,” has had multiple Netflix comedy specials, including the Emmy-nominated “I Love Everything” and “Annihilation,” as well as the Emmy-winning “Talking for Clapping.” His most recent work, “We All Scream,” also marked his directorial debut.

Acaster, who starred in the four-part Netflix comedy series “Repertoire,” is the first comic from the UK to have more than one special released on the platform. Meanwhile, Lind starred in two seasons of HBO Max’s reimagining of “Gossip Girl,” and has film credits that include “The Babysitter: Killer Queen” and “Doctor Sleep.”

Filming started on March 20th. The “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” sequel is scheduled for a December 20th, 2023 release. We’re expecting that to be pushed into 2024.
