HBO’s “Succession” Upcoming 4th Season Will Be It’s Last

Throughout 2022 and into 2023 we’ve had to see a lot of great shows come to an end. This year will mark the end of “Star Trek: Picard” (maybe?), “The Blacklist,” “Doom Patrol,” and more. Unfortunately, it’s time to add another to that list. HBO’s hit series “Succession” will be coming to an end after its upcoming fourth season.

    “Succession” HBO Max

“Succession” was an instant success for HBO when it premiered in the summer of 2018. Not only was it a ratings win, but critics were largely unanimous in their praise for the very black comedy/drama. The satirical and scathing look at the backstabbing Roy family was fertile ground for award-winning performances and writing. Over the course of three seasons, “Succession” picked up multiple Emmys for its ensemble cast, writing team, and the production as a whole. Seasons 2 and 3 were both awarded with the Emmy for Primetime Drama Series.

    Brian Cox, “Succession” HBO

At the very least, the show is ending on its own terms. Series creator Jesse Armstrong was the one to break the news, though he had reportedly made hints about this. (Reportedly to Brian Cox, who plays the patriarch of the Roy family.) According to Armstrong, the plan had always been to end with season 4. He noted if the audience knew the series was going to end at a certain point, it could’ve affected the way they viewed it and interpret things.

Given how fragile the broadcast and streaming environment seems right now, especially with HBO Max, it’s fortunate we’re actually going to be able to see the series come to an intentional end. HBO previously axed successful programs such as “Westworld” and “Lovecraft Country” unceremoniously, leaving viewers unfulfilled regarding characters and story arcs.

Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin “Succession” HBO

The final season of “Succession” premieres March 26th, 2023. We look forward to seeing how things wrap-up to arguably one of the best shows of the last decade.
