HBO Max Cancels “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”

HBO Max has confirmed both “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” are ending with a 4th and final season. The Greg Berlanti-produced shows originally started on the now-defunct DC Universe (DCU) streaming service. They hopped over to HBO Max when it launched in 2020.

Producers for “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” saw this coming. So the shows’ 4th seasons were written with proper endings in mind. Meaning they won’t join the cavalcade of shows that were canceled before we got a satisfying ending. But it also sounds like they won’t be hopping platforms again like HBO Max’s “Minx.”

“While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” a spokesperson for HBO Max said. “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”

“Titans” first premiered on DCU in 2017, and was successful enough to get spin-off “Doom Patrol” a year later. Hence all the shared production team members between the two shows listed above. The first 2 seasons of “Titans” were exclusive to DCU, as was the 1st season of “Doom Patrol.” When DCU was shut down and HBO Max launched in 2020 both shows migrated over.

The decision to cancel these series could be part of HBO Max’s current initiative to cut $3 billion from their budget. Or it could be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran and DC Studios wanting to create a cohesive universe. It could also be a mixture of the two or none of the above.

Either way, the cast a crew are clearly proud of the work they did on both series. “I’m immensely proud of our gifted cast, crew and writing staff and their efforts in bringing to life all 49 episodes over the last five-plus years,” Greg Walker (“Titans” executive producer) said. “I couldn’t have asked for better partners in Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and HBO Max, and from the beginning, Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman. I’m incredibly grateful for their unyielding trust throughout this process.”

“To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons,” showrunner and executive producer for “Doom Patrol” Jeremy Carver said. “Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.”

You can catch “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” exclusively on HBO Max. We look forward to seeing what everyone involved will make next.
