The director of Netflix’s most popular CG animated film is raring to go on new projects. Chris Williams, director of “The Sea Beast,” has signed a deal with the streaming giant for more films. The first of which will be a sequel to seafaring adventure. He’s certainly got the chops. Williams’ film persists as Netflix’s most-watched animated film.

After 25 years of working at Disney animation studios, Williams decided to move on and start his own projects. Inspired by a talk from Pixar’s Ed Catmull and being in attendance at the retirement party of Disney legend John Musker, Williams took control of his destiny and wanted to forge his own path in the animation industry. In 2018, he went to Netflix who, at the time, hadn’t even begun their foray into animation.

Williams was attracted by Netflix’s spontaneity and willingness to try new projects. They stood out against other studios that outlined yearlong plans and concrete paths. The creative freedom Netflix provided was exactly what he was looking for. And we can’t think Netflix isn’t also counting is blessings that they landed such a talent.

“The Sea Beast” sequel will see the return of Jacob Holland and adopted daughter Maisie Brumble. The first film is a charming, heartfelt adventure about found families and the dangers of stigmas. We’re anxious to learn what new adventure they’ll have together and what beautiful new beasts they might discover. Williams’ is also looking forward to heading a brand new project following the sequel and flexing his world-building muscles and add a brand new epic to his repertoire.

You can catch “The Sea Beast” streaming on Netflix now.
