What an incredible shame. Apparently, Nicholas Cage will not be reprising his role as Spider-Noir in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.” We’re still greatly excited for the film, but this is a disappointment to be sure. Cage’s 1950s-style drawl and jargon brought an irresistible charm to the black-and-white nazi-punching version of the web slinger.
When probed about it, Cage said he hadn’t been asked to return for the role. “You’d have to ask Sony. I don’t know what’s going on with that. No one’s spoken to me about that,” he told ScreenRant. “Ask them. I don’t know. I really don’t. I wish they would. I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that’s a great character. Spider-Man’s the coolest superhero. And then you combine that with Cagney and Bogart and Edward G. Robinson, come on, it’s a great character.”
Hopefully, it’s not the last we’ve seen of Spider-Noir. More Spider-Verse films are planned down the line. A third film is already in the pipeline, including a spin-off. Fingers crossed this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Cage’s iconic character and performance. Maybe there just wasn’t room for Noir amongst an expanded cast of spider-versions.
Besides, given his popularity amongst fans, it’d feel almost unfair to feature him without the appropriate screen time. Let’s hope Sony gets the message and brings our beloved Noir back for future films. In the meantime, we’ll miss him, but look forward to “Across the Spider-Verse,” which opens June 2nd, 2023. And we’ll catch Cage in his new “Renfield” film, which hits theaters April 14th, 2023.
