Sony Pictures is starting pre-production on the official sequel to 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” Gil Kenan, who co-wrote “Afterlife,” will be writing as well as taking over the director’s chair. Jason Reitman, who directed the 2021 hit film, will be co-writing. Both Kenan and Reitman will be producing the new film alongside Jason Blumenfeld.

“A few years ago, my father [the late Ivan Reitman] handed me the keys to Ecto-1, and together we made Ghostbusters: Afterlife” Reitman said. “Words will never express how grateful I am to have made a film with my father by my side. It’s now time to hand those keys to my creative partner and fellow Ghostbuster Gil Kenan, a brilliant director who will keep the Spengler spirit alive. I can only hope to provide him the same producorial care and support that my father showed me.”

“It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” Kenan said of the news. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.”

Kenan and Reitman aren’t the only ones amped to return to the world of “Ghostbusters.” Insiders indicate the larger ensemble cast from “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” are returning for the next installment. Performers like Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon are reportedly ready to return to the fire station.

Not much else is confirmed about the project. But rumor has it the new film has a working title of “Firehouse,” and will take place in New York in their iconic headquarters. This project is currently slated for a December 2023 release. Which is still a blisteringly fast pace compared to the decades fans had to wait for “Afterlife” or even the 2016 “Ghostbusters” remake.
