When animals lose their young, it’s one of the most heartbreaking things. Sometimes, it’s obvious they are missing something, and their maternal instincts never quite go away. That was true for owl Luna.
Luna lost her clutch last year. This year, her eggs failed to hatch. Robert E. Fuller, the British wildlife rehabilitation specialist that’s been overseeing Luna, has watched her go back to her nest only to find it empty. She laid a third egg, which was documented on Facebook.
Fuller received information that two baby chicks had recently become orphaned, and immediately thought of Luna. He thought her maternal instincts would be fulfilled if she was introduced to the chicks.
Just like he had hoped, Luna accepted the chicks and was clearly thrilled to have them with her.
Luna is now a full fledged foster mom! Congratulations to Luna on her new family, and Happy Mother’s Day!
