HBO Max Developing “IT” Prequel Series “Welcome to Derry”

A new series called “Welcome to Derry” is in the works for HBO Max. The show is a prequel to “It: Part One,” taking place in the 1960s. It may give the origin story for Pennywise, who originated in the Stephen King novel “It.”

Since Pennywise’s reign of horror works in 27 year cycles, this would mean we are likely following the group he terrorized before the 1989 Losers Club. Many fans were quick to point out this is the group Pennywise won against. Because this new show is set to revolve around the two modern film adaptations, there is no way to know if fans will get to see an extra-dimensional turtle god.

If the show goes into production, Andy Muschietti (“It: Part One,”“It: Part Two”) is slated to direct the first episode. Muschietti is also attached as an executive producer, along with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. The Muschiettis and Fuchs developed the series together, and Fuchs wrote the script.

Barbara Muschietti worked as a producer on  “It: Part One” and “It: Part Two,” as well as a producer and writer for the supernatural horror movie “Mama.” Jason Fuchs served as a co-producer, uncredited script revisionist, and played Richie’s manager in “It: Part Two.” So it’s safe to say all three are well acquainted with “It.”

Warner Bros. and HBO Max are collaborating a lot, considering there are currently two shows in development in Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman” universe. One will center on Colin Farrell‘s The Penguin. The other will focus on Arkham Asylum. There is also a “Dune” universe series, “Sisterhood of Dune,” in the works as well.

No word yet on when fans will be able to float with “Welcome to Derry” but Nerdbot will keep you posted on any updates.
