Michael Johnston in Talks to Join Brendan Fraser’s “Mummy” Sequel

We have more exciting news coming out of the upcoming sequel to The Mummy. Michael Johnston (Obsession) is in early talks to join the cast. If he signs on, Johnston would be co-starring with franchise staples Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Rachel Weisz (Dead Ringers).

The upcoming film is being directed by Radio Silence (Ready or Not) and written by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill). At this time, plot details are still firmly under wraps.

The franchise kicked off in 1999, with The Mummy directed and co-written by Stephen Sommers. It stars Fraser and Weisz as explorers in the 1920s trying to stop a mummy hell-bent on reincarnating his long-lost love. The duo returned for the 2001 sequel Mummy Returns, with Sommers writing and directing again. Only Fraser returned for 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, directed by Rob Cohen, from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

There is also the 2002 spin-off The Scorpion King starring Dwayne Johnson, which spawned 4 sequels, for some reason… 2008’s The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior, 2012’s The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption, 2015’s The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power, and 2018’s The Scorpion King: Book of Souls.

This makes the upcoming feature the 9th installment in the franchise, but the 4th in terms of the main story arc. While we aren’t sure at this time where the story will pick up. It’s assumed it will take place after the events of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Universal’s newest addition to The Mummy film is slated to hit theaters on October 15th, 2027.
