Since 1979, the Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks have been supplying readers with a wide assortment of imagination-fueled tales. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) will direct and produce an adaptation of the series for the big screen from a script by Tom Bissell (Andor). 20th Century Studios is backing the upcoming film.

This unique series of gamebooks was mostly aimed at children. They tell nonlinear stories that allow readers to make choices that will affect the book’s overall outcome. The idea was first used in Bantam Books’ The Cave of Time by Edward Packard. But the idea really took hold in the late 1990s, with 184 titles being published from 1997 to 1999. Many readers like ourselves probably grew up with R. L. Stine’s Give Yourself Goosebumps spin-off series.
While this will be the first attempt to officially adapt Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks for the silver screen, there have been other takes on the idea. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch adapted the concept using Netflix’s built-in interactive interface.
At this time, there is no set release window for Radio Silence’s Choose Your Own Adventure film. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the project as it develops. The collective’s most recent film Ready or Not 2 is currently in theaters.
