    Free Android Apps Worth Installing

Streaming prices keep going up steadily. Subscription madness seems to apply to mobile games too. Finding an app that is both truly free and truly good is hard. The Google Play Store front page is mostly ads. “Top Free” charts have apps that are free to download but are pushy about everything else.

The good thing is, there are still plenty of Android apps worth your time. Apps that don’t ask for another payment every few minutes. You just need to know where to look. Here are some apps worth adding to your phone right now.

For the Movie and TV Obsessed

Streaming tiredness is real. Keeping up with five different streaming services just so you can watch what you like can be tiring, especially since content keeps shifting from one platform to another with no clear sense.

YouCine  has become a popular choice among those who prefer to find their movies and series in one place only. It doesn’t install via the Google Play Store but via an APK file, which means it skips the geographic restrictions that prevent you from accessing content available anywhere else in the world. Its interface is clean, its library is wide and includes everything from recent releases to older titles that other streaming services have removed from their catalogs. For anyone who spends more time looking for something to watch than actually watching, it’s worth a try.

    For Gamers Who Want More

Mobile games are notorious for their bad reputation. To be honest, most of it is deserved. Nowadays, free-to-play basically equals pay-to-win most of the time. Even paid apps keep finding new ways to charge you more after you’ve already bought them.

One workaround that built a loyal following is HappyMod. This is a platform where users can find modded versions of popular Android games and applications. Modded versions let gamers unlock extra features in the game or app, remove ads from it, and get back content that was only available for paying customers after the release of the game or application. Additionally, this site also gives its users a verification process for every download. Real users check and verify each install before it gets added to the list for everyone else.

    For the Productivity Nerd

Not all apps that can be used are necessarily fun ones. Some tools which are often overlooked but really deserve a spot on your Android phone are:

Obsidian is one such app you should check out. It’s an application for taking notes which is beloved by its fanbase for good reason. All data is stored locally as text files and can be accessed offline. It links notes together in ways that are genuinely useful for anyone who thinks in connected ideas. Writers, researchers, and general overthinkers will get a lot out of it.

Syncthing allows for file synchronization between devices without placing any information into the cloud. If you have ever wished for your phone and laptop to stay in sync without a paid subscription and someone storing your data, Syncthing is the cleanest solution out there.

    For the Customization Crowd

The greatest advantage offered by Android is just how customizable it can get. One of the best ways to customize it is through launcher apps. Niagara Launcher allows for a simpler interface and is easier to use one-handed. Lawnchair provides you with a very stock Android experience compared to what most manufacturers offer. Both are completely free and both have a great impact on the usability of your device.

For wallpapers, Backdrops offers an excellent selection that doesn’t look like something from a cheap 2014 smartphone.

For the True Crime and Podcast Listener

Pocket Casts is still the best podcast player for Android. All you would ever need is included in its free version. It handles subscriptions well, the playback options are great, and it automatically resumes from where you stopped without any fuss.

For those who like both podcasting and audiobooks, there’s an app called Libby. You can connect it to your local library card, and it will give you access to thousands of audiobooks and ebooks. This app is one of those which seem too good to be really free.

    A Note on Installing APKs

A couple of the apps mentioned above, such as YouCine and HappyMod, require APK installations outside the Play Store. It’s a usual process that goes along with using an Android device, but you need to turn on installs from unknown sources in your settings first. If you download apps from trustworthy sources with active communities, the process stays easy and safe.

The Play Store is just a first step. The apps you really want to find won’t ever make it to the front page.
