“24 Jump Street” is Officially in the Works at Sony

Sony Pictures says 24 Jump Street is in development, with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube all in talks to return. It has been over ten years since audiences last saw Schmidt and Jenko team up on the screen

Rodney Rothman, who previously received an Oscar for work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with Hill and Meghan Malloy.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, behind 2012’s 21 Jump Street and 2014’s 22 Jump Street, will return as producers with Neal H. Moritz and Tania Landau. Producers also include Hill and Strong Baby Productions partner Matt Dines, plus Tatum and Free Association partner Reid Carolin.

What Happened to 23 Jump Street?

Plot info has not yet been provided, and the title alone prompts the obvious question: why skip the number 23? Moritz posted the script’s title page to Instagram, captioned, “It took so long to make, we had to skip one.”

That is because a third installment has been in development at Sony for over a decade. A different iteration was planned earlier as a crossover with Sony’s Men in Black franchise. However, that version never went into production. Speaking to ComicBook.com in June 2024, Tatum said, “There is a project that was written, and it’s still the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie.” Clearly, the enthusiasm never faded on his end.

The original movies followed Officers Schmidt and Jenko on undercover missions as high school students to infiltrate a drug ring. Captain Dickson, the brawny veteran squad leader who ran the program, was played by Ice Cube. 21 Jump Street grossed $200 million worldwide, and 22 Jump Street grossed $331 million at the international box office. The films were adapted from the 21 Jump Street television series that aired on Fox in 1987. Johnny Depp portrayed one of the show’s lead characters for two seasons, with a cameo in the first film. The series ran for a total of five seasons.

Currently, Tatum only has an offer for the third movie, 24 Jump Street, with negotiations expected to happen in the near future. While he isn’t as far along as Hill and Ice Cube, who are already in negotiations, it is reasonable to predict Tatum will sign on given how loudly he has supported the project.

unreleased No release date has been announced. The script is written and key actors are already involved, so it looks more likely than ever, though.
