Sony’s State of Play ran for about an hour and fifteen minutes on June 2nd, 2026. We’re going to condense all that into a rundown that tells you everything that was presented and our brief thoughts on the featured games.
No more introduction needed, let’s get to it.
Wolverine
There was quite a bit of footage shown of the game to kick things off. If you’ve played Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, then it seems like this isn’t far removed from those in terms of action. The big differences are the amount of gore on display and how Wolverine is not a long-distance fighter. He’s up close and personal with his claws, but he can leap and pounce to close distances quickly. There were some quick cameos of other X-Men characters on display. Overall, it seems like it’s a guaranteed hit that won’t reinvent action games but will be a lot of fun. It releases on September 15th of this year.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls
This fighting game has been talked about and featured quite a bit over the last several months. More character reveals were made. Nothing unexpected, but it looks like it’s going to be a solid and beautiful-looking game. Just, maybe not the best follow-up to Wolverine in a State of Play.
Rayman Legends Retold
Upcoming remake of the mid-2010s platformer. Great game on its own. Remake seems pleasant enough. It’s releasing on October 1st.
Bancho the Chef
A prequel to Dave the Diver. The previous game is an awesome management sim about fishing and running a sushi bar. This time, you play as Bancho the Chef instead of Dave the Diver before they started working together. Little doubt that this will be a quality game based on the pedigree.
Kemuri
Stylized action game where you fight Yokai with the potential of up to two other players for a three person team. It looks fine but it also doesn’t exactly scream “exceptional.” Releasing sometime in 2027.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
Previously announced remake of the original Tomb Raider title. This is pretty much exactly what you would imagine it to be. Nothing shocking, but it will be fine for fans. Releasing February 12th, 2027.
The Lost Wild
One of the more enigmatic titles in the showcase. Seems like it could be summed up by asking, “What if Jurassic Park was a survival game?” Looks pretty solid but these titles live and die by their gameplay mechanics. Releasing 2027.
Phantom Blade 0
China’s answer to games like Sekiro and Nioh. Releases on September 9th, 2026.
Dune Awakening
Yup, that sure is Dune alright. You can tell from all the sand. The game is also already available on PC and probably didn’t need to be featured in the State of Play.
Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Remastered
If you know Dynasty Warriors, then you know exactly what this game will be. It looks pretty, let’s just hope it runs smoothly to properly handle the number of enemies on screen.
No Rest For the Wicked
Port of the PC title. Coming out in Oct 2026.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom’s Resident Evil with swords and Oni gets a huge upgrade that puts a lot of emphasis on the swordplay. Actually looks pretty amazing even if we already knew this was coming. It releases on September 25th, but a demo is available as of right now.
Silent Hill: Townfall
Already knew of this game’s existence thanks to Konami’s own broadcasts, and this trailer didn’t do much to bring anything new to the discussion. Still looks creepy, though, and it just seemed to add more horror to this State of Play overall. Releasing on September 24th.
Ace Combat 8
Planes fly, shoot stuff, go boom. Long running franchise, doubt this game will end up poorly made. Releasing on October 2nd.
Stuntman: Hollywood
Well, there’s a fine “how do you do?” Stuntman is coming back with a Hollywood theme. We even get the DeLorean from Back to the Future in it. This series hasn’t seen a title in it for a LONG time but it emphasized precise driving. If the difficulty is more forgiving here, we’re looking at a good time.
ILL
Horror game. Sure. Could be good.
Control Resonant
Previously announced sequel to Remedy’s Control, where you play as the brother of Jessie. If it’s anything like the first game or like Remedy’s Alan Wake 2, this could be the sleeper hit of the year. It drops on September 24th.
Marathon Nightfall
This probably won’t sit well with all the people who are livid that Destiny 2 is ending. Marathon is not in a happy place right now, and developer Bungie isn’t either.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds
The longtime computer RPG series is coming to PlayStation Plus with a dragon-taming element to it. It Looks…. Fine? Coming in the fall of 2026.
Gitaroo Man
PlayStation classic rhythm game. It is what it is.
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Another PlayStation classic. This game deserved better when it was released, and it deserves a full-on remake today as opposed to a digital re-release. But, hey, it’s still going to be good to play it again.
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Another PlayStation classic release.
Until Dawn 2
Didn’t we already kind of have this game, but it was called The Quarry? Different development team handling this game indicates that Sony just wants to capitalize on the intellectual property by handing the franchise off to someone who will do something with it. The graphics look a little dated, and the plot is a little ambiguous right now. As it should be. Coming in 2027.
God of War Laufey
The big finale where they revealed 20 straight minutes of gameplay, only to cap things off by saying the game was “in development.” No release date, no telling if this is how things are going to look and be by the time it releases. That said, it looks pretty incredible. The game takes place after Faye, the wife of Kratos, dies, and she ascends to the next life. Faye’s move set is much more agile and quick than Kratos’, relying on aerial combos, sword attacks, and magic blasts. The only sticking point is that she’s paired with characters that consist of a talking ribbon attached to a sword and a talking green cube of slime. This could be wonderfully funny in the long run or a bad attempt at humor.
There you have it, the entire State of Play. It had a couple of good moments, but it was largely mediocre, especially with so many of the titles already having been announced. We’re all in on being able to play as Faye in the new God of War and Wolverine, looks great too. Sony still has a lot to make up for, though, with the number of poor decisions they’ve made between price increases, mishandling Bungie, and the disaster that was Concord. This didn’t do enough to erase that damage, but there are still some fun titles on the horizon.
