Mick Jagger Joins “Three Incestuous Sisters” as a Lighthouse Keeper

Mick Jagger is heading to Sicily for his latest acting role. The Rolling Stones frontman is starring in Italian director Alice Rohrwacher‘s adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel Three Incestuous Sisters, alongside Dakota Johnson, Josh O’Connor, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, and Isabella Rossellini.

According to unconfirmable Italian press reports, Jagger is starring as the lighthouse keeper. The son of the lighthouse keeper (Jagger) is being played by O’Connor. The Rolling Stones frontman touched down via helicopter earlier this week on the volcanic island of Stromboli, off the coast of Sicily, where Rohrwacher’s gothic drama is shooting.

The location carries its own cinematic history.

Stromboli is where Rossellini’s father Roberto Rossellini famously began his scandalous affair with her mother Ingrid Bergman in 1949 on the set of his film by the same title. Having Rossellini shoot on that same island adds an unexpected layer to the production.

Jagger’s role will only keep him in Sicily for a few days. His appearance is somewhat of a surprise given his busy schedule with the Rolling Stones. They are gearing up to release their new album Foreign Tongues on July 10th. With no tour planned to support the record, Jagger found time to fly to Sicily for the shoot.

The Three Incestuous Sisters By Audrey Niffenegger

    Prior to Three Incestuous Sisters,

Jagger’s last movie role came in 2019 when he starred in The Burnt Orange Heresy, directed by Giuseppe Capotondi. His film appearances have always been sporadic. Previous roles include Freejack (1992), the Nazi drama Bent (1997), Enigma (2001), The Man From Elysian Fields (2001), and The Bank Job (2008).

On the creative side, Three Incestuous Sisters is shaping up as one of the most anticipated projects in world cinema. Rohrwacher and writer Ottessa Moshfegh co-wrote the screenplay. Based on the illustrated gothic novel about three sisters living in isolation. Suddenly their relationship is disrupted. All by the arrival of a mysterious lighthouse keeper’s son. Specific plot details are scarce. Though we do know that it’s going to be a very loose adaptation of the book.

Three Incestuous Sisters is the first feature in English by the two-time Cannes prizewinner Rohrwacher. Their previous successes include The Wonders (2014) and Happy as Lazzaro (2018). Her most recent film, La Chimera (2023), starred O’Connor alongside Rossellini, and was written and directed by Rohrwacher herself. Their previous partnership surely made it easier for both to be reassembled.

Principal photography began in April, with ten weeks of shooting in Stromboli and Rome. Indian Paintbrush is financing and producing. Johnson and Ro Donnelly will produce through their TeaTime Pictures alongside Steven Rales.

With Jagger on board, the cast is complete. It’s a film to watch.
