Are you in the mood for some hay rolling? FX has placed a series order for the upcoming comedy Very Young Frankenstein, based on Mel Brooks’ 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein.

The project has had a pilot order since last September, but has been in development for close to a year. Plot details are still under wraps, but the name heavily implies it takes place before the events of Brooks’ film.

    20th Century Fox

Young Frankenstein centers around Frederick Frankenstein, pronounced Fronk-en-steen, who treks back to Transylvania to pick up his grandfather Victor’s experiments. The problem is that they mainly involve reanimating the dead. It starred Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, and Kenneth Mars.

Brooks will executive produce Very Young Frankenstein, which is set to star Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House. Kumail Nanjiani, Nikki Crawford, and Cary Elwes are also confirmed for the pilot

Taika Waititi (Next Goal Wins) directs the pilot, from a script by Stefani Robinson (What We Do in the Shadows). Both will executive produce alongsideGarrett Basch, Brooks, his producing partner Kevin Salter, and Young Frankenstein producer Michael Gruskoff.

“Very Young Frankenstein blends inspiration from the fan-favorite movie with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story,” says Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president. “In the hands of FX veterans Stefani, Taika and Garrett, alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know that fans will have as much fun watching this series as we’re having making it.”

We’ll keep you posted on updates about Very Young Frankenstein as the series devlops.
