Labubu, you either love them or you hate them. In my house… I put off getting one as long as I could before the kids were practically begging me for them. My solution? Well, I found some “Lafufu” at a nearby dispensary. I mean I was there anyway, and they only wanted like $16 bucks for em. Anyway regardless of where you stand on the little plush dolls, there’s a movie in the works.
Pop Mart, the China-based retailer who distributes the little guys is teaming up with Paul King (Wonka). In Paris at an event celebrating the anniversary of the Monsters universe that included Labubu, King and creator Kasing Lung the director revealed that a movie was in the works.
Writing the script will be Tony Award-winning writer Steven Levenson. Since Levenson already has experience with bringing other live action films to life like Disney’s Snow White Live-Action Remake we’re sure that he’ll bring his own expertise to the film.
While Plot details have not been disclosed we do know that the film will be a mixture of live-action and CGI. Serving as producers for the film are King, Michael Schaefer (The Martian), and Wexin She (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). Lung will executive produce. Brittany Morrissey oversees the film for the studio. King served as writer and director for films like Paddington and Wonka.
There is a book out by Kasing Lung called The Monsters Universe – The story of Puka – Pato and the Girl – Miro’s Requiem. Lung, who created Labubu through a series of picture books in 2015, was born in Hong Kong and grew up in the Netherlands. The book also costs upwards of $1000 from the one place I could find it. It would seem that this book is very rare. Potentially, it would hold the answers to a potential plot for the upcoming film.

The way I see it this film could go in two different directions. In my mind these creatures are creepy, so it would make sense to me to go the way of Gremlins. Make it a horror film. Or they could just do it as a heart-warming cutesy thing for marketing purposes like Where the Wild Things Are. They do also kind of remind me of Care Bears with their individual colors and whimsical nature.
Seeing who’s working on the film it would lean more cute instead of making it scarily awesome. All I’m saying is that there’s something to making kids horror films, especially after the success of Five Nights at Freddy’s and the upcoming Poppy Playtime film.
We’ll keep you updated on plot details once we know. Stay Tuned!
