Nathan Fillion Says “Firefly” Animated Series is in Development

After weeks of Nathan Fillion teasing big news with his Firefly co-stars, he’s finally confirmed what the project will be. As many fans speculated, the cast will be doing a shiny new animated Firefly series together. It will be based on the beloved cult sci-fi show that Fox canceled after only 1 season in 2002.

The announcement was made during a panel in Washington, D.C. that was taped live for Fillion and Alan Tudyk’s Once We Were Spacemen Podcast. The duo sat alongside fellow co-stars Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. All of whom were involved in the initial social media teases. And all of them are expected to return for the new series. Despite Adam Baldwin being absent from the panel, he is also set to reprise his role.

The animated series is being developed via Fillion’s Collision33 production banner. The project is being done in partnership with 20th Television Animation, since it still holds the rights to the IP.

Series creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in this project. Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Tara Butters (Agent Carter) are attached as showrunners and have already completed the script. Putting this series head and shoulders above any progress we’ve seen in previous rumored reboots.

The Firefly animated series will take place between the 2002 timeline of the series and the events shown in the 2005 movie Serenity. This explains how Tudyk’s fan-favorite character is able to return. However, there still doesn’t seem to be any word on how the late Ron Glass’ Shepherd Book character will be handled.

“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant,” Fillion tells Deadline. “Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.”

We’ll keep you posted on updates about this long-awaited project as it develops. Check out the recently released concept art below:
