The saga of Middle-earth has been documented in at least two trilogies of films. One of the main fixtures of The Lord of the Rings trilogy was the character of Gollum. Played to perfection in motion capture and voice acting by Andy Serkis. Serkis revived the role of Gollum in the first of the Hobbit trilogy. Since then, he’s been involved in many projects, including acting, writing, and directing. We’ve previously reported that he’s working as the director and star of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Now, we can report that the Academy Award-winning actress, Kate Winslet, will be joining him.

    New Line Cinema

    Winslet Won’t Play Gollum

Winslet is one of the most acclaimed actresses of the last 30 years. Along with taking home an Oscar in 2008 for The Reader, she has six other Academy Award nominations. She hasn’t been part of the Middle-earth world yet, but that will be changing next year. Details about the plot of The Hunt for Gollum are still under wraps. It’s anyone’s guess who Winslet will be playing. Well, we can pretty much guarantee she won’t be playing Gollum.

Along with the new, there will be some old. Peter Jackson will be returning as a producer for the upcoming film. Incidentally, Winslet’s first role was in the Jackson-directed Heavenly Creatures. Rumors have been circulating as well that Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen may return as Frodo and Gandalf, respectively. We’re eagerly awaiting more details to potentially confirm this news.

Even without confirmation of returning cast members, the addition of Kate Winslet gives the film a steady force to build on. Serkis has shown great talent as a director, and we know he’s exceptional as Gollum. We’ll keep you posted on more developments. Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release on December 17th, 2027.
