How to Balance Business and Leisure on a Company Trip

Business travel is increasing. In fact, according to the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), 71% of travel buyers reported an increase in their company’s business travel last year. However, with more and more employees travelling domestically and internationally to perform tasks, it has never been more important to find a balance between business and leisure.

Bleisure, as some say, can be a rewarding opportunity for employees. A comfortable work trip should encompass various benefits for workers and their bosses, but bettering the team members’ wellbeing is a must. Fortunately, this post outlines three ways to do just that.

    Book Comfortable Accommodation

An important aspect of business travel is the employee’s ability to do well, and this will hinge significantly on their individual wellbeing. To boost your wellbeing on your next business trip, you must select accommodation in a convenient location. A well-chosen location, which should be near both business venues and leisure attractions, can save valuable time on travel and maximize enjoyment without compromising work duties.

Business accommodation is often deemed comfortable when it offers a range of key features, including quality furnishings, reliable internet connections, and close proximity to work or transit. If your trip is a lengthier stay, then service apartments with full kitchens and laundry are typically more practical and cost-effective than hotels. Short-term rentals, like these apartments that are furnished in Toronto, provide home-like amenities and more space.

It is a good idea to check the company policy before booking accommodation to provide clarity on expectations. The policy should state approved vendors, spending limits, and what expenses are reimbursable, so this is a good step to prevent any confusion and save money as well as time.

    Find a Dedicated Workspace

While some people are comfortable working in their homes, this can be a problem for others. Many workers find it hard to switch into “work mode” when at home, so finding a dedicated workspace should be a priority. This creates a clear boundary between work and relaxation, ultimately leading to a more inspired, productive, and refreshed employee.

If you have fewer demanding tasks to complete, a local café can be the perfect choice. It’s important that this type of establishment has reliable internet access, though. However, you might prefer to find a coworking space. This option is ideal for a dedicated, professional environment. Several apps are available that can help you find and book spaces based on your needs, whether it’s for video conferencing or a private office.

Coworking spaces are also much better for networking, so keep this in mind for your next business trip.

    Maintain Healthy Habits

As previously noted, an employee’s wellbeing is essential to the success of a business trip. You need to stay healthy to achieve this, which is why maintaining healthy habits throughout the trip is important. Your ability to focus on work tasks while enjoying your free time depends on eating balanced meals, exercising regularly, prioritizing sleep, and staying hydrated.

Planning your itinerary in advance can support this. You should schedule downtime just like meetings and be clear about your boundaries to prevent work from intruding on your personal time. Technology can help manage your work remotely, which is an advantage, but some apps should be used to share your calendar with team members. Doing so will help avoid issues such as being contacted outside of work hours.

To conclude, there are many ways to achieve a balance between work and relaxation, even if you are off on a business trip. If anything, finding this balance is even more essential during this time, as your wellbeing can directly impact the success of your trip.
