We’ve been following the upcoming “Street Fighter“ film for a while now through a number of ups and downs. The adaptation of the legendary Capcom fighting game series was originally supposed to hit theaters in early 2026 until Sony scrubbed it from its release slate. It made sense considering the film was changing directors and hadn’t even announced anyone in the cast. In May, there were some additional names added to the film, and now, one of the franchise’s iconic characters has been cast.

Relative newcomer Callina Liang will play Chun-Li. Liang is a Canadian actress who got her start on the British series “Tell Me Everything” before appearing in Steven Soderbergh‘s “Presence,” and an episode of Apple TV+’s “Foundation.”
While the character of Ryu is the franchise’s flagship icon, Chun-Li is arguably just as well known, and easily the biggest female character in fighting game history. With her lightning-fast kicks, the character has been a staple in virtually every game and spin-off to ever be associated with the series. Ming-Na Wen originally played Chun-Li n the 1994 “Street Fighter” film. The character was also the subject of her own film, “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,“ where she was played by Kristin Kreuk.

Chun-Li is a Chinese police agent whose father was killed by the series’ primary antagonist, M. Bison. Now she aims to take down Bison’s criminal empire of Shadaloo along with the rest of her allies and other fighting competitors. Liang will be joining a cast that as we previously reported, includes, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, Noah Centineo, and Andrew Koji. We’re still waiting to hear who they’ll be playing.
“Street Fighter” has already had a bit of a troubled production and they’re going to be beat to the punch by “Mortal Kombat II” this October. We will continue to update as we find out more about how this fight is going to go down.
