As of the time of this writing, we are about a week away from the release of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.” The sequel to Hideo Kojima‘s first game as an independent director (away from longtime employer Konami) is set to be another milestone for the auteur. In the build-up to the game, Kojima’s also announced a number of “Death Stranding” related projects including a live-action film, and an anime. Now it’s getting possible another project in the form of another animated film, possibly.

Kojima’s production company, along with animation company Line Mileage, announced they had hired Aaron Guzikowski (“Raised by Wolves“) to write a screenplay for an upcoming animated feature film in the world of “Death Stranding.”
“I love the world of ‘Death Stranding,’ it’s so creatively freeing, so beautifully dark and yet hopeful,” Guzikowski said. “I’m so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I’ve long admired, has invited me to dwell within his creation, to birth new stories into this fertile, mind-bending universe.” Which seemingly confirms the film will not retell the events of the game and will serve to expand the world that Kojima has created.

Like many Kojima titles, “Death Stranding” is a complex narrative with underlying themes of humanitarianism and plot devices that often blend the supernatural and the scientific. Animation should serve the story well as it’s often times more believable to see the grandiose portrayed in this manner as opposed to trying to capture it with actors and CGI. Of course, we’ll have to see how that turns out when the live-action film happens too.
As to how much Kojima may or may not be involved, he said he’ll “let them work on it without too much of my input, because that might get in their way. I don’t want to go in & ask them to make a bunch of changes.”
“Death Stranding 2: On The Beach” hits PS5 on June 26, 2025.
We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
