Cameras to Roll on “Highlander” Reboot this September

Last month we reported that the long gestating Highlander project from director Chad Stahelski was moving from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios / United Artists. Considering Amazon’s desire to acquire and push forward films from known intellectual properties, this could be a positive push towards getting the film off the ground. Here we are a month later and reports are indicating that things are finally moving forward with filming potentially starting later this year.

When we found out Henry Cavill would be starring in the film, our levels of interest shot through the roof. Along with being a great actor in general, Cavill is well known for embracing various fandoms including Warhammer 40,000 and “The Witcher.” To have someone like him swinging the sword we were sold. But its been years of uncertainty since then.

According to a recent interview, the waiting period may be over in the next two years. “If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we’ll be shooting sometime in September,” Stahselski told Collider. “And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching ‘Highlander.’” That is incredibly promising to hear. Stahelski’s last film “John Wick: Chapter 4″ was released in 2023, so hopefully his slate has stayed open to start helming this project in the next couple months.

Amazon has been actively pursuing existing intellectual properties to fill a film slate. They’ve got James Bond, “Pacific Rim,” and even a live-action “Voltron“ film on the docket. With the “Highlander” franchise dormant for years but still having a passionate fanbase, it seems like they’d have a vested interest in helping Stahelski get a MacLeod back on the big screen.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
