After yet another massive bidding war over the future of the MI6 agent with a license to kill, a new home for James Bond has been revealed. We’re not really surprised, honestly. Considering how long MGM held the reigns of the franchise and everything.
Back in 2022, retail and streaming giant Amazon closed a deal for around $8.5 billion to acquire MGM and their entire catalog. So, it makes perfect sense that Amazon MGM Studios will take control of the Bond films.
But this is more of a surprise because of how adamantly franchise steward Barbara Broccoli said she would never give the property to someone like Amazon, calling them “fucking idiots” for referring to Bond as “content.” Supposedly both Broccoli and longtime franchise producer Michael G. Wilson are handing over “full creative control” of the franchise, but will maintain some connection to the property.
“With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects,” Wilson said. “Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”
“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli,” Barbara said in a statement. “I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”
The full details of the deal haven’t been made public yet, nor is there a timeline for new projects. We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
“My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished,” former Bond actor Daniel Craig said. “I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them.”
