Disney Channel’s series “Wizards of Waverly Place” ran from 2007 to 2012 and starred Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, and David DeLuise. It told the story of three young wizards trying to master their newfound powers under the tutelage of their father. Aside from a stand-alone special, “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex,” in 2013 the series has remained dormant, until now.
A revival show now has formal series orders for both Disney Channel and Disney+!
“Wizards of Waverly Place captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of Wizards, inviting both longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David and our incredible cast and crew.”
The new series is set to begin production in L.A. next month. It will see the return of both Gomez and Henrie, reprising their roles as siblings Alex and Justin Russo. The co-stars will also be executive-producing the project. The “Wizards of Waverly Place” revival also stars Max Matenko (“Platonic”), as Justin’s youngest son, Milo. Alongside Janice LeAnn Brown (“Bunk’d”) as the young, powerful wizard Billie; Alkaio Thiele (“Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends”) as Justin’s oldest son, Roman; and Mimi Gianopulos (“Rutherford Falls”) as Justin’s wife, Giada.
The Plot
But it seems that Gomez will only be guest-starring in the premiere episode. The plot will center on Henrie’s character, Justin, as he chooses to live a mortal life with his family. When his sister Alex brings Billie to his home for help, he must mentor this new wizard-in-training.
Andy Fickman (“Race to Witch Mountain”) will direct the pilot and several other episodes, written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (“Raven’s Home”). Gomez, Henrie, Fickman, Elinoff, Thomas, and Gary Marsh will all executive produce.
The “Wizards of Waverly Place” revival is set to hit Disney Channel and Disney+ sometime later this year. We’ll keep posted on updates about this project as they become available. In the meantime you can check out the entire series and movie exclusively on Disney+.
