Filmmaker Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”) wants to know what it sounds like when doves cry. He is attached to produce a currently untitled jukebox musical of Prince songs for Universal Pictures. This particular project, based on the late musician has been kicking around since 2018, with a script by Bryan Edward Hill (“Zone 414”).
Producers for the project include Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Troy Carter of Atom Factory, and Universal Music Publishing Group chair Jody Gerson. Rebecca Cho of Proximity is attached to executive produce. At the moment that is really all we know about the project.
Prince on The Silver Screen
Prince’s music is no stranger to the big screen. He starred in Albert Magnoli’s 1984 rock musical “Purple Rain,” which nabbed him an Oscar for best original song score. Hit songs like “When Doves Cry,” “1999,” “Kiss,” and others that can be heard all over television and film soundtracks.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith claims he shot an entire documentary about Prince and his life inside his studio Paisley Park located in Chanhassen, Minnesota. However, due to some bizarre contractual issues, it will most likely never see the light of day. The music legend unfortunately passed away in 2016.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about this Prince-centric jukebox musical as they become available. In the meantime you can check out the trailer for “Purple Rain” below:
