    Ming-Na Wen Joins Sony’s New “Karate Kid” Film

    We have another exciting cast announcement for Sony’s upcoming “Karate Kid” movie. Ming-Na Wen (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) will be joining the cast! She will star opposite Ben Wang (“American Born Chinese”), Joshua Jackson (“Dr. Death”), and Sadie Stanley (“Cruel Summer”). Alongside Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, who are reprising their roles from previous entries in the franchise.

    This currently untitled “Karate Kid” film will take place on the East Coast and center around a teen from China (Wang). A young man, who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor(s). Not much more is known about the film’s plot at this time, and there is no confirmation on what role Wen or Stanley will play. The best we have on Jackson is that he will be one of the main characters.

    Jonathan Entwistle (“I Am Not Okay With This”) will direct from a script by Rob Lieber (“Peter Rabbit”), with Karen Rosenfelt producing.

    “The Karate Kid,” franchise currently consists of five movies along with the Emmy-nominated series “Cobra Kai.” The series is a continuation of the first three films and brought back Macchio and several other original cast members. It just began filming its sixth and final season for Netflix. Collectively the franchise so far has earned $618 million globally.

    Sony Pictures currently has this new “Karate Kid” film slated to release on December 13th. We’ll keep you posted on more updates as they become available. In the meantime, all of the films sans 1994’s “The Next Karate Kid” are streaming through Starz. All five seasons of “Cobra Kai” are on Netflix, with the first two also available on YouTube Premium.
