Over the weekend, “Insidious: The Red Door” hit the $182,430,087 mark at the worldwide box office. Making it the highest-grossing horror movie of 2023, to date! This milestone also makes the 5th entry into the “Insidious” franchise, the highest-grossing in the series.

“Insidious: The Red Door,” beat out Universal’s “M3GAN” which ended its 2023 theatrical run at $180 million. The only other horror movies that have come close are also additions to long-running franchises with “Scream VI” at $168.9 million and “Evil Dead Rise” with $146.7 million.

“Meg 2: The Trench” could possibly take the crown from “Insidious.” In its first few days of release, it has already raked in $142 million worldwide. And when we are talking about movies, a roughly $40 million gap isn’t nearly as wide as it may seem.

Given the success of “Insidious: The Red Door,” it was also announced last week that the film is now available to purchase or rent on Digital platforms like Amazon and Vudu.

“Insidious: The Red Door” is written by Scott Teems (“Halloween Kills”), based on a story by franchise mainstay Leigh Whannell. And Patrick Wilson is not only returning to his starring role in the series but also making his directorial debut. It also has Rose Byrne returning to her role as Renai Lambert and Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert.

The new film follows the Lamberts ten years after the events of the last film. The story revolves around Josh (Wilson) heading east to drop off his son Dalton (Simpkins) at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton’s college dream soon becomes a nightmare, when the repressed demons of his past return to haunt them both. They must venture into The Further, once again.
