The upcoming MAX animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” just got a new trailer. This half-hour animated series will be a joint effort between WB Animation and Amblin TV. It will serve as an origin story for Joe Dante‘s “Gremlins” horror-comedy franchise.

“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” is set in 1920s Shanghai. It tells the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing, who becomes the shop owner Mr. Wing in 1984’s “Gremlins,” first meets a young Mogwai named Gizmo (AJ LoCascio). Sam, Gizmo, and a street thief named Elle become lifelong friends while they try to return the Mogwai to his family. Often encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore along the way. But if the supernatural weren’t enough for this group to contend with. They are also being chased by a power-hungry industrialist attempting to grow his army of evil Gremlins.

The series also boasts an incredible cast of voices. Including Ming-Na Wen (“The Mandalorian”) who voices Fong Wing, Sam’s mother, and doctor of Chinese medicine. BD Wong (“Mr. Robot”) voices Hon Wing Sam’s father and the rock of the Wing family.

James Hong (“Big Trouble in Little China”) voices Sam’s grandpa, a free spirit and self-proclaimed expert in Chinese myth and magic. While his family dismisses all his fantastical journeys. They begin to believe him when he shows that he alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai.

Izaac Wang (“The Santa Clauses”) voices Sam, a naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become a mysterious shop owner. He lives with his family in the tiny apartment behind their struggling medicine shop. Though he is normally sheltered and cautious, all that changes once he embarks on an epic adventure to return Gizmo to his family.

Tze Chun serves as showrunner and executive producer for the series. With Brendan Hay as executive producer along with Dan Krall who will be supervising producer.

“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” is set to hit Max on May 23rd, 2023. Check out the new trailer below:
