James Gunn Says a DC/Marvel Crossover is “More Likely Now”

Writer/director/studio head James Gunn sure has a way of making comic fans salivate, doesn’t he? In his latest tease, he suggested that a crossover between Marvel Studios and DC Studios is not only possible, but more likely, due to his involvement with both companies.

While his foray into superhero films started with 2010’s “Super” starring Elliot Page and Rainn Wilson. Gunn has now famously worked for both of the comic juggernauts. Writing and directing the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films for Marvel Studios. Then, he did “The Suicide Squad” for Warner Bros. Pictures, before heading up newly formed DC Studios with Peter Safran.

When asked about a possible crossover between DC and Marvel, Gunn responding fairly positively. “I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC],” he told Empire Magazine. “Who knows?” But before we get too excited. “That’s many years away, though. I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

So while it is possible for creators to play in both sandboxes like Gunn has, this isn’t something we should expect to see in the next wave or two of comic book films.

Despite some fan rivalry regarding films, Marvel and DC Comics have done crossovers before dating all the way back to the 1970s. Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has teamed up with DC’s Superman and Batman. Marvel’s The Hulk has fought against Batman. The Joker and Red Skull were even buddy-buddy for a little bit during a team up between Captain America and Batman. Well, that is until Joker realized Red Skull was really a Nazi. Even the Clown Prince of Crime hates Nazis. There was even a team-up between The Avengers and the Justice League of America.

Since Gunn has successfully worked for both companies, fan curiosity about another crossover has only grown. It seems like it may be more than just wishful thinking now. But remember, no matter which company you like better, we all belong in the Merry Marvel Marching Society and fandom rivalries can ruin everyone’s fun.

Gunn’s next film, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3,” hits theaters May 5th of this year. “Peacemaker” will return for a second season sometime in 2025, after Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” film releases.
